The Strokes - Room On Fire
Vinyl LP
Strokes - Room on Fire (Vinyl LP)
The follow-up recording to the group's insanely popular debut recording Is This It, Room On Fire proves to be a worthy addition to the band's catalog. Released a full two years after their debut, The Strokes are back and sound very determined to live up to the expectations for this new release. Although not drastically different from Is This It (at least on the surface), the songs expand upon previous bases and suggest that the band is continuing to grow musically, fighting against tendencies and exploring.

Radiohead - In Rainbows
Vinyl LP
Radiohead In Rainbows On Vinyl LP
In Rainbows, as a title, implies a sense of comfort and delightfulness. Symbolically, rainbows are more likely to be associated with kittens and warm blankets than the grim and glum circumstances Radiohead is known for soundtracking. There's a slight, if expected, twist at play. The band is more than familiar with the unpleasant moods associated with colors like red, green, and blue -- all of which, of course, are colors within a rainbow -- all of which are present, and even mentioned, during the album. On a couple levels, then, In Rainbows is not any less fitting as a Radiohead album title than "Myxomatosis" as a Radiohead song title. Despite references to "going off the rails," hitting "the bottom," getting "picked over by the worms," being "dead from the neck up," and feeling "trapped" (twice), along with Radiohead Wordplay Deluxe Home Edition pieces like "comatose" and "nightmare" -- in the same song! double score! -- the one aspect of the album that becomes increasingly perceptible with each listen is how romantic it feels, albeit in the way that one might find the bioport scenes in David Cronenberg's to be extremely hot and somewhat unsettling. Surprisingly, some of the album's lyrics are even more personal/universal and straightforward than anything on The Eraser, the album made by Thom Yorke and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. "I'm an animal trapped in your hot car," from "All I Need," has to be one of the saddest, most open-hearted metaphors used to express unrequited love. "House of Cards" begins with "I don't want to be your friend/I just want to be your lover/No matter how it ends/No matter how it starts," and the one with the worms includes "I'd be crazy not to follow/Follow where you lead/Your eyes/They turn me." This effective weaving of disparate elements -- lyrical expressions commonly associated with the band, mixed in with ones suited for everyday love ballads -- goes for the music as well. The album is very song-oriented, with each track constantly moving forward and developing, yet there are abstract electronic layers and studio-as-instrument elements to prevent it from sounding like a regression. In Rainbows will hopefully be remembered as Radiohead's most stimulating synthesis of accessible songs and abstract sounds, rather than their first pick-your-price download.

The album highlights PJ Harvey’s incredible ability to consistently create a unique, yet always impactful experience with each new album. Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace
Vinyl LP
The Foo Fighters Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace On Vinyl LP
In 1997, Foo Fighters teamed with alt-rock production cornerstone Gil Norton to make their best album, The Colour and the Shape. Ten years later, they've regrouped with Norton for a disc that's more sophisticated and diverse, if a tad less rockin'. The curveballs include "Stranger Things Have Happened," a solo soul-searcher where leader Dave Grohl's accompanied by just his acoustic guitar and a ticking metronome, and "Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners," an acoustic guitar duet for Grohl and guest virtuoso Kaki King. Plus "Summers End" tickles the Foos' classic-rock fetish with a dead-on Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young arrangement. There's still enough of the intense, snarling power-pop that's Foo Fighters' longtime forte. "The Pretender," "Erase/Replace," and "Long Road to Ruin" combine sheer thrust, zeal, and melody like no other group currently on the charts. Yet the finale, "Home," makes its clear that this is a changed band--or, at least, that Grohl's a changed man. With only his piano for company, Grohl's pleading voice reveals fragile layers of insecurity and loneliness as he sings "all I want is to be home." Seems this rock & roll road warrior's mellowed some, albeit without compromising Foo Fighters' vitality.

Nick Drake - Family Tree
Limited Edition Pressing
Nick Drake Family Tree On Numbered Limited Edition Vinyl Of Only 1000 Copies
You'd think there wouldn't be much more to present by a songwriter who recorded three albums in his lifetime and has been dead since 1974. However, interest in Nick Drake's riveting music has grown enormously in the new millennium. Rarities were added to a number of posthumous collections, but with Family Tree his estate has brought forth an hour of music that predates his first album, Five Leaves Left. This set illuminates Nick Drake's musical background, with his mother and sister appearing, and even Nick Drake himself on clarinet for a Mozart trio. He covers traditional numbers as well as songs by Dylan, Blind Boy Fuller, and Jackson C. Frank. There are clear links to his own early compositions, including a couple early versions that appeared on his debut. Some of this has circulated on bootlegs over the years, but here assembled and sonically polished, it radiates with warmth. Recorded in casual circumstances, there are bits of chatter and laughter between songs, painting a picture of a happy, loving home scene.

Cat Power - Jukebox
180g 2LP
Cat Power Jukebox On Deluxe-Edition 180g 2-LP Vinyl Set! (5 Bonus Cuts Not On the Standard CD Version!)
Eight years is a long time in almost any artist's career, but in Cat Power's case, it's an even more sizeable gulf, as Chan Marshall's collections of other people's songs reflect. 2000's The Covers Album found her becoming an ever-more nuanced performer, tempering the rawness and intensity of her earlier albums with a lighter approach. 2008's Jukebox reaffirms what a polished artist she's become, especially since her Memphis soul homage The Greatest. But where The Greatest sometimes bordered on slick, Jukebox's blend of country, soul, blues and jazz feels lived-in and natural. Marshall recorded this set with her touring act, the Dirty Delta Blues Band, which includes some of indie-rock's finest players, includng her longtime drummer, the Dirty Three's Jim White -- who gives even the quietest moments vitality -- as well as Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's Judah Bauer and Chavez's Matt Sweeney, so it's not surprising that the album often plays like an especially well-recorded concert. However, some of the session legends she worked with on The Greatest make guest appearances, including Teenie Hodges and Spooner Oldham. Oldham's song for Janis Joplin, "A Woman Left Lonely," appears here, and the original's sophisticated-yet-earthy sound is one of the album's biggest influences.
As on The Covers Album, Marshall makes bold choices. She citifies Hank Williams' "Ramblin' Man" (switched to "Ramblin' (Wo)Man" here), turning it slinky and smoky with spacious drums and rippling Rhodes; despite the very different surroundings, the song's desperate loneliness remains. Joni Mitchell's icily beautiful "Blue" gets a thaw and a late-night feel that is completely different but just as compelling. One of the most drastic remakes is Marshall's own Moon Pix track "Metal Heart," which adds more drama and dynamics to one of her prettiest melodies. While the way this version swings from aching verses to cathartic choruses works, the subtlety and simplicity of the original is missed. Indeed, many of Jukebox's best moments are the simplest. Marshall's reworking of the Highwaymen's 1990 hit "Silver Stallion" frees the song from its dated production, replacing it with acoustic guitar and pedal steel that impart a timeless, restless beauty. She pays Bob Dylan homage with a gritty, defiant-yet-reverent take on "I Believe in You" from his 1978 Christian album Slow Train Coming and "Song to Bobby," Jukebox's lone new track, dedicated to and inspired by Dylan so thoroughly that she borrows his trademark cadences without sounding like an impersonation. Uneven as it may be, Jukebox is still a worthwhile portrait of Chan Marshall's artistry.

British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?
Vinyl LP
British Sea Power Do You Like Rock Music? On Vinyl LP
British Sea Power return with their third and finest full-length. Here they reintegrate the rock with a slew of blistering guitars and unpredictable studio noisemaking worthy of their visceral live performances. Witness fist-pumpers like "No Lucifer" or the Bonzo-styled drumbeat bashed out under a climactic synth-string section on "Waving Flags." Better yet, "Down on the Ground" and "A Trip Out" both feature guitar riffs worthy of the Judas Priest songbook, before they're enveloped in the vast expanse of their accompanying songs. The sound here is raw and spacious. Guitars remain largely drenched in reverb, and various acoustic instruments grace the arrangements, along with various random noises and happy accidents. On "Canvey Island," vocalist Yan describes the fatal 1953 floods on the Thames estuary from the viewpoint of a football fan decrying the loss of memorabilia rather than lives. On "Atom" he decries the "bright but haunted" modern age through the apt metaphor of the split nucleus: "Oh caveat emptor / Open the atom's core." Brainy explorations like that, along with BSP's notoriously clever sense of humor, make the self-conscious title no surprise, but there's really no better way to describe it. This is what rock music can and should be.

Willie Nelson - Moment of Forever
180g 2LP
Willie Nelson Moment Of Forever On 180 Gram Vinyl 2LP With An Etching On The D-Side
Countless Westerns have centered around the theme of a young turk coming into town to try to take down a legendary gunslinger. Well, for the past couple of decades, Willie Nelson has turned that imagery on its head, attracting countless younger artists eager to soak up some of his musical mojo and infuse the master's work with some of their own spirit.
Moment of Forever, matches Willie Nelson with Kenny Chesney. The very idea of these seemingly disparate characters coming together is intriguing enough on paper. What really counts, however, is how it works on disc -- and work it does, with Chesney's production bringing out Nelson's natural warmth and grace.
While he's written some of the most enduring tunes of the past few decades Nelson has long been considered one of the premiere song interpreters of his time, infusing a surprising array of tunes with his singular personality. This record includes a hushed, poignant version of the Kris Kristofferson-penned title track and a super-heated, album-closing version of Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody."
The songs that Willie Nelson wrote for Moment of Forever take on many of the same topics addressed in that pair of tracks -- taking stock of a life well lived and considering the possibilities of what might lay down the road. On songs like the sweetly twanging "Always Now," Willie comes across like a man who's come to terms with most of those issues, coming to the conclusion that "there never was a used to be...it's always now."
Other highlights include Willie's take on Dave Matthews' "Gravedigger" and tracks like "Worry B Gone" -- where Willie trades verses with Chesney The easy vibe carries over to the gently celebratory "I'm Alive" -- on which Nelson marvels at life's simple pleasures.

Shelby Lynne - Just a Little Lovin'
Vinyl LP
Shelby Lynne Just A Little Lovin' On Vinyl LP
No pop singer has as pure and expressive a voice as Shelby Lynne. Her music has always been stained with conflict and sadness and, obviously, doesn't lend itself to mass audiences. This is a sweetly rendered set of songs featuring Lynne’s lovely, scarred vocal interpretations. Lynne and her producer, Phil Ramone, do right by the songs in stripping them down to their bare bones. Just a Little Lovin' is a marvel, Lynne’s intimate reading really makes you feel that indeed, a small amount of comfort and connection can indeed make a cruel, indifferent world manageable.
"Dusty Springfield was a soulful singer. You can't ever fill her shoes. So I just set out to sing songs we all want to hear again. The road map I followed when cutting these, was the one she made years ago. It was easy. I just sang and let the songs do the work. I'm so glad I did. Dusty inspired it all".

Erykah Badu New Amerykah Part 1 (4th World War) (LP)
Universal Motown’s multi-platinum-selling, Grammy award winning singer/songwriter/actress Erykah Badu returns to the music scene with her new album New Amerykah featuring the debut single "Honey." Laced with Erykah’s bluesy grit and MC style vocals, the song is bolstered by producer’s 9th Wonder’s razor sharp hip hop beats. Badu describes the song as “an old school track with some funk on it.” Badu has enlisted some of the most talented, groundbreaking underground producers and engineers in the hip-hop game to support her breakthrough return, including Grammy Award winning producer 9th Wonder (Jay-Z, Nas, Mary J. Blige), Madlib, Mike “Chav” Chavarria and R&B singer Bilal. “The music is the star,” says Erykah, “I just laid down my vocals and let the music breathe while the melodies tell the stories.” The album is part one of the series New Amerykah Part 1 & 2.
Badu, a Dallas native, emerged in 1997 with her masterpiece debut album Baduizm as a primal force of nature connecting old school soul with contemporary R&B. Jack Johnson - Sleep Through The Static
Vinyl LP
Jack Johnson Sleep Through The Static (Vinyl LP)
My friends and I have just finished recording a new album called Sleep Through the Static. At this point in my life I weigh about 190 lbs and my ear hairs are getting longer. I also have a couple of kids. My wife popped them out, but I helped. Some of the songs on this album are about making babies. Some of the songs are about raising them. Some of the songs are about the world that these children will grow up in; a world of war and love, and hate, and time and space. Some of the songs are about saying goodbye to people I love and will miss.
We recorded the songs onto analog tape machines powered by the sun in Hawaii and Los Angeles. One day, JP Plunier walked into the studio and told us, "It has been 4 to 6 feet and glassy for long enough," and so we gave him a variety of wind and rain as well as sun and so on. And Robert Carranza helped to put it all in the right places.
After inviting Zach Gill to join Adam Topol, Merlo Podlewski, and myself on our last world tour, we decided to make him an official member of our gang. So our gang now has a piano player, which probably makes us much less intimidating, but Merlo, our bass player, is 6'3" so we are still confident.
All of these songs have been on my mind for a while and it is nice to share them. I am continually grateful to my wife who is typing this letter as I dictate it to her.
I hope you enjoy this album.

Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely
180g Pressing
The Raconteurs Consolers of the Lonely on Triple Gatefold 180g RTI Pressed 2LP Set!
Jack White and Friends Nailed Their Newest with a Torrential Blues-Rock Sound!
The Ranconteurs are a new band made up of old friends, consisting of Jack Lawrence, Patrick Keeler, Brendan Benson and the inimitable Jack White. The seed was sewn in an attic in the middle of a hot summer when friends Jack White and Brendan Benson got together and wrote a song that truly inspired them. The inspiration led to a creation of a full band with the addition of Lawrence and Keeler. While each of these four individuals have had successful careers with their own bands, the culmination of all of their talents is what truly makes The Raconteurs a force to be reckoned with.
While retaining all the characteristics that defined The Raconteurs’ first album, Consolers of the Lonely contains more than a few surprises. The bluesy, searing guitar riffs. And great story-telling are at the forefront. Patrick Keeler's drums sound reminiscent of Meg White’s plating, with crashing cymbals adding a primal quality to the numbers. Jack White seems to have moved his analog obsession into a sound that perfectly suits his second band. This album, recorded in analog, on vinyl is beautifully packaged and incredible sounding; with plenty of huge riffs to enjoy at the summer festivals!
