The latest version of the A21a combines new features with design upgrades. Operating in Pure Class A, the Series two retains all the musicality of its predecessor, with improved performance, higher specification and additional facilities.
Over the last twenty years the A21a has become a reference amplifier, gaining a reputation as an affordable way into true high-end music reproduction. The class A single ended design is one of the purist amplification circuits available. With this in mind the series two has been carefully upgraded to preserve and communicate even more of the original signal through new straight line design topology.
Several improvements in performance have come from removing facilities that degrade sound quality. Gone are the mono and tape switch from the front panel controls, giving a more direct signal path through the pre-amplifier circuit. The balance control has also been removed allowing better stereo separation and imaging. The position of the pre-amplifier circuit board has been re-located to the front of the amplifier. This takes advantage of an improved switching circuit reducing long signal runs through a large single PCB. The high quality Alps volume control has been retained and now has a motor fitted so it can be run by the standard Sugden RC5 remote control handset.
The heart of the A21a is the pure class A output stage, and this offers exception quality within its power envelope. To offer this performance through a wider range of loudspeakers and in more demanding listening environments, overall power output has been improved. The power supply now has more current delivery and this means output does not drop when used with either eight or four Ohm loudspeakers. The increased current capability also gives a better performance in the bass and with more demanding passages of music.
Sugden has always been proud to operate its own custom engineering workshop. A high content of labour comes from in house to create the cases and carry out most aspects of fine finishing. All Sugden products are designed to be minimalist in operation with a high quality, durable finish. The A21a Series two has been the last product to receive an improved appearance in the current range. It now benefits from the same quality materials and construction detail of the more expensive Sugden models. There has been a significant increase in the quality of the case materials and this can be clearly seen in combination with a new clean cut appearance. Extra weight has been added with thicker materials used on the front panel and chassis. The heatsink has a custom profile allowing it to operate correctly with friendly horizontal fins.
