B&W Launch New CM1 Mini Monitor
The CM1 mini-monitor shares its crossover and driver technology with the 805s. B&W state that ‘It continues a long and distinguished line of compact and inherently accurate monitors that have the ability to re-create an utterly convincing portrayal of music’s dynamics, colour, energy and beauty’.
The driver line-up is a 130mm Kevlar® cone bass/midrange and 25mm Nautilus™ tube-loaded aluminium dome tweeter, which extends the CM1’s frequency response to above 50kHz. For a small cabinet design the bass extension is excellent producing a clear rhythmically tuneful sound even when placed close to a wall. You can adjust low frequency response with the speaker in this position by using the optional port sleeve that modifies the low frequency response without having to resort to tone controls – if you have them.
The cabinet is made to B&W’s usual high standard and is available in Wenge, Rosenut and Maple. (Wenge is pronounced Vengy and similar in finish to dark Oak). The CM1 are a classic small box design that is very attractive to look at. What sets them apart is the quality of the overall finish and this is very apparent with the grille removed. The accompanying stand is also a clean chunky design that is just substantial enough to make its own statement and yet still compliment the speaker.
So how do they sound? The CM1 takes you into 805 territory and gives you a taster of the smooth extension, depth and clarity that the 805 possesses in a smaller unit without the expense. B&W are masters at techno sampling, employing spin offs from their flagship designs and then creating a whole new design around it. The CM1 is an example of this and no doubt others will follow to make a CM range.
The CM1 will be very at home in small rooms where quality looks and sound count; they are tantalising in a frustrating way because they do sound very good when partnered with a good quality input and that just makes you want more but the only way you will really find out for yourself of course, is to come and listen.
