The Devil is in the detail.
Mu-so packs Wi-Fi, UPnP, Bluetooth, AirPlay with Internet radio and streaming services along with six Naim designed speakers driven actively by (6 x75) 450W of digital amplification. It’s a complete all-in-one system for standalone use or as part of a whole-house music set-up and has some funky coloured speaker grills to choose from.
A new app controls not just the Mu-so but existing Naim network music products and for the fist time control of Naim streaming products is offered to users of Android devices plus the iOS of the current n-Stream app. So it can be used as a stand-alone or as an addition to an existing Naim network music system.
Not only will it support UPnP music streaming up to 24-bit/192kHz when connected using Ethernet but offers up to 48kHz when used wirelessly, and will operate in party mode when used with other Naim network products. Splendid!
There is a custom designed tweeter midrange and bass for each channel driven by its own 75 watt digital amplifier with a 32-bit chip capable of 150m calculations per second handling the digital signal processing. The Mu-so also offers two settings for when in use close or away from a wall.
You control Mu-so with a touch panel similar to that used on the flagship Naim Statement amplifier with a silky outer volume ring that shows 11 illuminated volume segments that increase with sound – there is also a supplied remote for simple volume and track settings or, the new App
Mu-so also has a 3.5mm analogue input, optical digital in, and a Type A USB for portable devices and storage media. So it could be used as a Sound Bar to push TV sound when not listening to music.
The unit is clad in an aluminium cased wooden enclosure chosen for its damping properties with a heavy finned heatsink on the rear and sits on a clear acrylic softly lit plinth. Seriously elegant!
