The speed of techno-advance even amazes me but many of us have played in one pond for quite some time - open source. Our website is built using open source products and now our suppliers are increasingly turning to open source to build open platform products that will transform the way we appreciate our music. Unhampered by the constraints of CD standards and mechanisms, those of us who have prayed quietly for the death of CD and MP3 restrictions can now rejoice. Flac has arrived in the mainstream. Rock on! Standards like Red Book are useful to create a level playing field but are also restrictive and have depressed music quality for years.
